Only 10% of life is what happens to you—the unexpected, the uncontrollable. The other 90%? Well… that’s all about how you choose to respond.
The 90/10 Principle is one of my favorites. I love the concept, and the individuals I train love it too. In fact, I lead my life with this very principle.
The problem is, we easily get caught up in the 10%:
— The flat wheel. — The unexpected rain. — The missed opportunity. — The unexpected criticism. — The bad day that came out of nowhere.
But here’s the key: You decide what happens next.
You can let that 10% define your day, your mood, and even your path forward. Or you can take control of the 90% that’s still in your hands.
The difference is how you react:
— When faced with setbacks, will you choose to see the lesson or only the loss? — When confronted by negativity, will you engage, or will you protect your peace? — When life throws a curveball, will you adapt, or will you let it throw you off course?
The 90/10 Principle is powerful because it reminds us of our agency. It’s about:
— Choosing to remain calm when things fall apart. — Deciding to keep moving when obstacles arise. — Focusing on the actions that are within your reach.
At the end of the day, the world can be unpredictable. But how you shape your experience—that 90%—is all on you.
Remember: 10% of things that happen in your life is not in your control, but 90% of how to react to it, is in your control. Your response is what shapes the rest.
